Benjamin Durand spoke about the Panther Asia team`s plan to participate in Formula 1.
The head and co-founder of the project expects to join the championship in 2026. Initially, it was planned to enter in 2022, but the development of the car was frozen due to the pandemic.
We still believe that the Asian market, the Chinese market, are the ones that will develop next [in motorsport]. Everyone looks west, no one looks east. Formula 1 is very much focused on the US, which is fine because the market is growing, but Asia and Africa will be next for F1, especially with [Alfa Romeo driver] Zhou in the championship.
We stopped the project due to Covid. We started developing the aerodynamics of the car, worked on the new [2022] regulations, did some work on computer simulations, created intellectual property, but were forced to stop. We are ready to continue, " Duran said.
The team intends to be based in Asia, create its own Academy and attract Asian pilots:
We have an Asian project, so the team is interested in a pilot from Asia. Right now Zhou is under contract with Alfa Romeo, and we`ll see what happens with Audi coming in [to replace Alfa Romeo as Sauber`s partner]. It`s too early to speculate. We are in contact with some riders, and by 2026 more will appear.
But we also want to nurture local talent and push them into Formula 1. It will take time to develop the Academy and the team won`t rely on it at first, but that`s our goal in the medium to long term: recruiting local expertise and talent to develop the car. The simple way is to build a team in England, hire people in England, where all the talent is now. We are not looking for easy ways.
Durand said when he is waiting for the application to be approved by F1 and the FIA:
Within a few weeks we are able to resume work in the aerodynamics department. Hiring [other] specialists will take longer. We don`t want to cost the wind tunnel right away. This is a huge investment that, frankly, isn`t really necessary since the wind tunnel is only used half the time. You can negotiate with the existing team or use other wind tunnels in Europe.
It all depends on when permission is received. Of course, investors won`t invest a lot of money before then. But I can imagine that the process will take several months, and I do not think that a decision will be made before May - at best. I think it will take four to five months.
If we start work in May, it will be very difficult to reach 2025. It`s better to start in 2026. The advantage of the current regulations is that you can purchase 70 percent of the car from another manufacturer.
Panther Asia has already reached a preliminary agreement on the supply of power plants.
We held talks with virtually everyone in the paddock. We have a signed preliminary agreement with one of the manufacturers. However, we approach the issue of power plants very carefully, because, as far as we understand, in 2026 there will be six motorists.
