Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received the country`s new football champion, Istanbul Basaksehir, on Monday, the presidential administration said. On July 19, Basaksehir secured his first Super League title after a 1-0 victory over Kaiserispor and became only the third team since 1959 to break the dominance of the big three - Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas. Erdogan himself, who was a semi-professional footballer in his youth, did not hide his sympathy for Basaksehir, although he said he also liked Fenerbahce. Erdogan welcomed the Turkish champions to the presidential palace in Ankara, and was also attended by Sports Minister Mehmet Kasapoglu and Turkish Football Federation chief Nihat Yozdemir. Basaksehir gave Erdogan a T-shirt with the number 12 and his name on the back.
