Guillaume Roquelin shared his opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of Max Verstappen.

Roquelin served as Red Bull`s chief race engineer from 2015 to 2022. After the Australian Grand Prix, the specialist moved to work with the team`s youth program.

Guillaume compared the appearance at Red Bull in 2009 of Sebastian Vettel, now playing for Aston Martin, and Verstappen in 2016.

I guess Sebastian was a more versatile pilot than Max when he came to us. This concerned the professional level, technology, communication. It was prepared by the school of [Michael] Schumacher, who was Sebastian`s idol. He often asked questions, took a lot of notes - a very thorough approach. It is no coincidence that he has won several titles. He was better prepared technically, psychologically.

Max has maybe a little more natural talent, which he mostly relied on. But Sebastian was a more versatile rider.

Max has always been the boss. He has tremendous self-confidence, knows what he wants, he is very straightforward. But to be honest, Max is weak from a technical point of view compared to other pilots with whom we have worked. I think he still needs to make a lot of progress.

By character and results advised by 1x2 livestream he is a leader. However, in technical matters and the development of the machine, he can add, I think, - said Roquelin.

The specialist also talked about how Verstappen has changed in recent seasons:

What struck me most of all was that he seemed to have lost that uncontrollable thirst for struggle, which we saw last year. He has matured and gained stability. The victory in the championship gave him more confidence, he began to fly differently.

It doesn`t have to be just one factor. This is a process consisting of several stages. Max started racing in F1 at a very young age, he had great ambitions, but, perhaps, lacked maturity.

[After moving to Red Bull] he became more confident in the team, closer to his goal. With us, he immediately won the race, which allowed us to take a step forward. Gradually he won more Grand Prix, developed connections with engineers.

Roquelin doesn`t see the Dutchman`s titles as a turning point in F1 or Verstappen`s career:

He has always had talent. It is not entirely correct to say that thanks to the championships, a new era has begun. She started when Max won his first race. Then the quality of the car played a role. We look forward to continuing to win titles and it`s up to us to create a car that matches Max`s talent.
